ISO 9001:2026, the sixth edition of the standard, was published on 16 September 2026. It replaces ISO 9001:2015 and its 2024 amendment, both now withdrawn.
For organizations with an accredited ISO 9001:2015 certificate, the transition timetable is not set by ISO. It comes from the transition requirements published by Global ACI — the international accreditation cooperation that replaced IAF and ILAC in 2026 — and is applied by each certification body. From 31 March 2028, new and initial accredited certifications can be issued only to ISO 9001:2026. Organizations certified to the 2015 edition must complete their transition by 30 September 2029. The transition can take place at a scheduled surveillance audit, at a recertification audit, or at a separate transition audit: ask your certification body which option and dates apply to you.
The 2026 edition builds on the existing framework of ISO 9001. ISO’s quality management committee highlights clearer wording, a stronger emphasis on leadership and quality culture, more clarity on risks and opportunities, and a revised Annex A on terms and intent. When you compare editions, compare against ISO 9001:2015 as amended in 2024: the climate-change considerations in clauses 4.1 and 4.2 date from that amendment, not from 2026.
